Yet Abu Dhabi is learning from its ‘Gold City’ mistakes. Today environmental standards are high rated agenda topics, with the government starting to require new buildings to be designed using Western-style environmental standards, defining new goals for water and energy consumption.

I guess we Western boys and girls all knew from the start that the metropolitan bubble was likely to burst pretty soon. After all we suffer(ed) from similar mistakes after being blinded by the same prosperity urge. Nevertheless, the Arabians foresaw to pass ours, when they choose to start their building constructions exactly the way we did only a number of years from now.

Fortunately, if we only jump one continent to the West, in many of its countries we experience a largely different attitude. Here governments and its people go past old school global technical, financial and multimedia developments, and en mass embrace new ones with great enthusiasm and positivism. Likely, the usage of mobile phones in Africa is expanding minute by minute. Mobile telecommunication networks are emerging and second hand Western phones find their ways to these markets. Even more the Africans understand the advantage of modern mobile payments and banking services, consequently never heard of checkbooks or physical money deposits. Also developing countries’ inhabitants from all over the world do prefer social network sites such as Facebook, above using email accounts to send digital messages. Facebook even launches a new mobile site, 0.facebook.com, which provides free access for developing countries with an increased optimized speed.

Instead of ‘The Desert Miracle’ its the developing countries that lead the way. Learning from our past mistakes, while humping over them straight into the future. They understand the advantage of the global network society, we’re living in these days, and do everything they can to become part of it. And believe me we’ll all soon discover construction, production, and agriculture ethics and sustainable energy resources to be their next hot fad.
